In both cases the vehicles are exempt from Chinese import duty.

Once inside China, however, it is not unlikely that the vehicles

will be sold and re-sold for profit.

On 14 June, NCNA reported the opening of a new 125,000 kilowatt power-generating unit at the Huangpu power station, some 10 miles east of Guangzhou. The power station, which was opened in 1976, now has four generating units with a combined capacity of 500 megawatts, making it Guangdong's largest.

Chinese delegates attend talks on Multi-Fibre Arrangements (MFA)

Chinese delegates attended the talks which began in Hong Kong on 22 June to discuss textile exporters' attitudes towards the Multi-Fibre Arrangement. China currently maintains observer- status to the MFA agreement on the international trade in textiles. Speaking to the press on the second day of the talks, Shi Yousan of China's National Textiles Import and Export Corporation, criticised the way in which the MFA had been exploited by the developed countries and had become an instrument of protectionism. He said that China would not be an eager party to the MFA until it once again guaranteed "equality and mutual benefit to both importing ane exporting countries".
