Dr Wilson asked how the Shenzhen authorities were

Mr Ye said coping with the current outbreak of rabies. that there had been 7 deaths from the disease in Shenzhen. All dogs in urban areas of the municipality now had to be

However, dogs were traditionally raised to eat- and many people believed that innoculation would contaminate their meat. In some villages people were reluctant to have their dogs destroyed; action was not being taken in such places unless a case occurred. When there was enough vaccine all dogs would be vaccinated. They were short of vaccine. More had been ordered from Shanghai but would probably not arrive until March.

Dr Wilson said that some dogs belonging to Shenzhen residents were being found dumped on Hong Kong's northern islands. Although Mr Huang said that the Hong Kong Government should be free to deal with such dogs,

Mr Akers-Jones reminded him of the scale of the problem in Hong Kong where more than 40,000 dogs had had to be killed and 70,000 innoculated.

Roads and Bridges

With the aid of a map, Mr Huang described some of the detailed plans for road improvements in Shenzhen. These included widening of the road to Guangzhou and to Man Kam To which would be completed by about March when the through coach service could start. Most new road building was being carried out in Lo Wu special district, where processing facilities for cross-border passenger traffic were also being improved. A new customs building would be put up on the East of the railway line. The intention was to reserve one facility for through traffic to Guangzhou, and another for local (Shenzhen) traffic.

Dr Wilson mentioned a new road which was apparently being built to the East of Shenzhen and directed straight towards the Shenzhen river to a point just East of the Man Kam To bridge. What purpose was this new road intended to serve? Mr Huang explained that the authorities' original plan was based on the construction of a second road bridge at Mar Kam To with one bridge being used by The authorities passenger traffic, the other by goods.
