The extensive modernisation and electrification of the Hong Kong section of the line is expected to reduce journey time from the present 70 minutes to 40 minutes. is planned to increase the number of trains going to Lo Wu to 4 per hour (and this figure could be substantially increased as needed e.g. peak festival periods). Once again, not all passengers will be travelling as far as Lo Wu for onward travel to China, but it is clear that the immigration and customs facilities at the planned new railway station at Lo Wu will need to be able to cope with a substantial increase in the numbers of passengers.

Plans for the modernisation of the Chinese section are at a tentative and preliminary stage. In the past, various Chinese officials have spoken of plans to double-track and to electrify the line north of Lo Wu as far as Guangzhou. However, it is apparent that these are not well advanced. Nevertheless, once the modernisation of the Hong Kong section is complete, Chinese requests for additional (diesel-hauled) through trains

can be expected.
