As part of China's current policy of making contact with Taiwan in every possible sphere, the NCNA are trying to engineer invitations from sporting bodies to Taiwan sports organisations to send teams to competitions in Hong Kong in which China will also take part. The Handball Association in Taiwan has accepted such an invitation for a tournament to be
held in April.
20. A Hong Kong Ice Activities Association was formed last September and is under communist control. Its officials are making arrangements through the NCNA for members to attend an ice hockey match taking place in Beijing in March.
LABOUR AFFAIRS
21.
As is customary at this time of year, numerous pay claims have been put forward in the private sector by unions affiliated to both left and right wing labour organisations i.e.
the FTU and the TUC respectively. So far settlement through
negotiation seems likely in all cases.
22.
After protracted negotiation, the International Transport Workers Federation has accepted the right wing Amalgamated Union of Seafarers as an affiliated member.

To counterbalance declining membership within the communist controlled Graziers' Union and the Flower and Plant
Workers' General Union, which cater for those in traditional occupations in the New Territories, communist labour officials there are contemplating the establishment of trade unions more appropriate to contemporary forms of employment in the area. In addition, these officials, in an effort to become. more involved in local affairs, are supporting New Territories
residents over claims for higher compensation for resumed land.
