"The Hong Kong Association for Solidarity with the Chinese Democratic Movement", which appears to be a "new left" organisation, came to notice for the first time when it held a press conference on the recent arrest of 12 dissidents in China. Subsequently it made unsuccessful attempts to present petitions at the offices of the communist newspaper, Ta Kung Pao, and the NCNA.

Members of the "Friends of the Philippines in Hong Kong' distributed leaflets in the Central District where many Filipina domestic servants employed in Hong Kong gather in their free time. The leaflets called for a boycott of the elections in the Philippines and advertised a symposium on the subject which the organisation was to hold later the same day. The symposium was poorly attended and
attracted little interest.

A delegation from the Hong Kong Federation of Students, which is penetrated by the communists, recently visited Hunan and Hubei Provinces to see the effects of drought there, with a view to raising relief funds in Hong Kong. They were warmly received by Chinese officials and shown round the affected areas, but were told politely that the Proviniial Governments did not need their help; it was suggested that they drop the proposal. Nevertheless, it seems that they will go ahead with their plan setting a target of HK$500,000. In a separate effort, the Hong Kong University Students' Union has reportedly raised HK$8,000 for drought relief.

The Workshop, due to being in Hong Kong in late August, is being jointly organised by the Association and the Hong Kong Federation of Students. Roth Groups have had trouble raising money locally.
