Students
23.
The Hong Kong University Students Union has a number of activities in mind to mark the Double Tenth, including a tour of China and local study classes and exhibitions. Likewise, the communist influenced Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS) will also be celebrating and two of its officers have gone to China, possibly with a view to co-ordinating activities with their counterparts
there.
24.
The HKFS, together with representatives of the student unions of the two universities and the Polytechnic, as part of a continuing campaign, announced that 207 persons had sent open letters to the CPG calling, in moderate terms, for increased democracy in China and fair trials for arrested dissidents. Student representatives have stressed their loyalty to China and have had meetings with senior communist cadres. There have also been two visits to Chiha to enquire into the arrests of certain dissidents, notably WANG XIZHE (recently reported to have been released). The New Left (para 23 June 1981 Report) has been less restrained while the KMT has attempted to exploit the situation
through expressions of support.

The Asian Students Association's "Workshop on Youth and Social Development in Asia" due to begin in Hong Kong on 28 August (para 26 June 1981 Report) is now winning some financial support and respectable recognition but its sponsorship of the event may be overshadowed by the U.N.'s Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP),
who now seek to play an important part in running it.
