The Deputy Editor of the Economic Unit of the Wen Wei Pao, who has been studying French in France, has reported to the editorial board that Chinese students and left wing observers of Chinese affairs there regard the paper as excessively biassed in its reporting, as opposed to the unbiassed factual reporting of the People's Daily (sic).

The publisher of the independent Hong Kong newspaper, Ming Pao, Louis CHA recently accepted an invitation to visit Beijing where he was given a flattering reception which included a meeting with DENG Xiaoping. Ming Pao is noted for its good coverage of both China and Taiwan and the invitation to CHA was no doubt intended to help ensure a favourable attitude towards China in its columns and possibly to further the policy of using Hong Kong as a bridge between China and
Taiwan.

The Cheng Ming Daily which began publication only last month (para 16 June 1981 Report) has closed down. The ban by the NCNA on any communist organisation doing business with it by way of advertising, providing reports etc, has therefore had its desired effect very quickly. The publishers' monthly magazine survives
however.
