2. There are currently just on 20,000 beds in 42 Government, Government-assisted and private hospitals. This will grow to nearly 33,000 by 1989. In 1973 there were 3.9 beds per 1,000 population, in 1979 there were 4.1 and the plan for 1989 is to increase that figure to 5.7.

3. Government health service charges are free or nominal. Emergency treatment at government hospitals and clinics is free, so are ambulance services. Outpatients are charged $3 (25p) including treatment, prescription and laboratory services and the cost per day for in-patient treatment in the general wards of government hospitals in $5 (40p).
