"Hong Kong : 1997"

You may be interested in the enclosed booklet "Hong Kong: 1997

(Reference material on the question of Hong Kong's status)" which has recently appeared on the bookstands here. It is perhaps further evidence of the media's increasing interest in such questions (Iain Orr's letter of 19 June to Dick Clift refers).

2.

The booklet is the first in a series of fortnightly magazines under the title Baixing ("common people"), edited by one Hu Juren (although Special Branch believe this to be a pseudonym). It is published by a local newspaper, Centre Daily News, which came to Hong Kong from Taiwan about a year ago. However, its fortunes have never been rosy and the newspaper is currently losing money. Despite its origins, the Centre Daily News strikes a reasonably neutral political stance which seems to be reflected in the collection of articles in Baixing. The latter are mainly reprints from other newspapers (from the "Easy thesis" to Mingbao editorials).

3.

Iain Orr has given Michael Atkinson a copy of the booklet to take with him to Peking.
