6. During the discussions which led to the establishment of Sino/Portuguese diplomatic relations, a private agreement was evidently reached about Macao. The only public indication of this was given by Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Song Zhiguang in an interview with Reuters in March 1981. Portugal, he said, had recognised China's sovereignty over Macao, but China had nevertheless chosen not to take back the Territory yet.
