OTHER DISCUSSIONS WITH THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT ON THE 1898 LEASE OF THE NEW TERRITORIES AND THE FUTURE

1. There have been no discussions of the New Territories Lease

as such, but the subject of Hong Kong's future was touched upon

during the visit to London of former Premier Hua Guofeng in

November 1979. As my right honourable Friend the Prime Minister

stated in Another Place on 4 December 1979, we agreed with the

Chinese Government that we shared an interest in maintaining the

stability and prosperity of the territory and that we agreed to

keep in contact on the subject.

2. No such discussions have been held.
