BRIEFING FOR S OF S's VISIT TO THE MIDDLE AND FAR EAST

I attach at Annex A a list of the briefs required for the Secretary of State's visit to the Middle and Far East. I should be grateful if addressees would set in hand the preparation of briefs attributed to them, clearing as necessary with other addressees. DS11 will be responsible for the final co-ordination. I should be grateful if fifteen copies of all briefs in final form could be with us by close of play on Friday September 4th, so that we may meet the private office deadline. The required format is at Annex B. Could I particularly enjoin you to be brief: I would suggest no more than a total of 4 sides of line to take and background (Defence Sales please note!). As much as possible of the material should be included, in note form where appropriate, in the former, and not repeated in the latter.

Perhaps Defence Dept would be good enough to co-ordinate the preparation of FCO briefs. DS11 will circulate shortly drafts of the briefs for which we have accepted responsibility.
