VISIT OF SIR LAWRENCE KADOORIE
Sir Lawrence Kadoorie will be visiting the UK at the beginning of August and would like to see the Prime Minister again, if this can be arranged. Their last meeting was on 30 July, 1980.
The Secretary of State will probably be meeting him on 2 September at the informal dinner arranged by Lord Airlie to celebrate the signing of contracts for the Castle Peak B power station (which will take place in Hong Kong on 27 August) and the impending signature of the loan agreements on 3 September in London.
Despite the euphoria over the Castle Peak B project Sir Lawrence still has his mind firmly set upon his long-term objective of entering into much closer co-operation with China. His company, China Light and Power Co. Ltd., is actively discussing two joint ventures with the Chinese. Ministers already are aware of the Guangdong nuclear project, the other project is a proposed hydro-electric scheme which would also be sited in Guangdong province. Both projects offer excellent prospects for UK firms, and it would be valuable if Sir Lawrence could again be assured of the Government's backing for his efforts.
The dates available for meetings with Ministers are from 7-14 August inclusive. I should be grateful for your advice on whether suitable
arrangements can be made. is attached.
