Thank you so much for sparing some of your valuable time last week to see me.
It was extremely interesting for me to hear your views and certainly very heartening to learn of your enthusiasm for, and interest in, Hong Kong.
I am returning to Hong Kong on Tuesday but it is particularly pleasing to me that before leaving we were able to come to a decision to award the contract for the steel for our new building to the British Steel Corporation. At the last minute both the Japanese and Germans came in with reductions in their original tender prices and the former, at least on the surface, brought their price below that of British Steel. However, this amendment was outside the time limit we had set for the tender exercise and it was a source of some satisfaction that we were able to use this excuse to reject their terms and to stick to our desire to place this contract with a British company. There are several more contracts specifically for electrical equipment and lifts etc. and I do hope that British industry continues to take an interest.
We shall very much look forward to seeing you and Mrs Atkins in Hong Kong when you are able to fit a visit into your busy schedule.
