a) Mass Transit Railway (MTR)

Island Extension

Initial stages of MTR finished in 1980. UK firms were

involved in tunnelling and supply of rolling stock

and other equipment.

Metro-Cammell hope soon to conclude

negotiations for supply of £80 million worth of rolling

stock for MTR extension.

Met-Cam supplied rolling stock

for initial stages of MTR, and in November 1981 won

contract for supply of rolling stock for Kowloon Canton

Railway.

-

ECGD involved in support of Met-Cam bids.

UK firms hoping for tunnelling contracts, but position

uncertain at present.

b) Replacement Airport

Existing airport at Kai Tak will be inadequate to meet

projected needs before 1990.

Feasibility studies for

replacement airport either off Lantan Island or on shore

of Deep Bay currently in progress. No final decision

likely before late 1982.

Construction of airport would

provide opportunities for British firms.

c) Lantau Fixed Crossing

d)

Studies due to be completed in December 1981. Final

decision likely to depend on siting of replacement

airport and possible industrialisation of Northern

Lantau. Hence not likely before later 1982. Cleveland

Bridge and Redpath Dorman Long hope to compete for this

work.

Water Supply Scheme

Three British firms, E Nuttall, F J C Lilley and Keir

International have prequalified for a contract for 13km

of tunnel and pipeline for a water conveyance system from

the Chinese border to a reservoir in the New Territories.
