Metro-Cammell have just negotiated £60m contract for rolling

stock, having supplied it for initial stages of MTR. UK firms

are hoping for tunnelling contracts, but position is uncertain

at present, as bids for tunnelling have been well above what

MTR had envisaged. Negotiations still in progress.

Kowloon-Canton Railway

Metro-Cammell

9. UK firms have picked up the major contracts awarded, including

£66 million contract for Westinghouse Brake and Signal and

£55 million rolling stock contract for Metro-Cammell.

negotiated in November an additional contract worth £17 million

for rolling stock.

Replacement Airport

10. The existing airport at Kai Tak will be inadequate to meet

projected needs beyond 1990. Hong Kong Government planning to

build a replacement. Final decision on whether to proceed will not

be taken until late 1982 but studies currently being led by

American consultants including British CAA. Probably replacement

to be at Chek Lap Kok, off Lantau Island, but site on shore of

Deep Bay is also being considered. If decision is taken in favour

of Chek Lap Kok, this will tie in with construction of proposed

bridges from Lantau Island to Hong Kong Island. Building of airport

may provide opportunities for British firms.

Lantau Fixed Crossing

11. Studies are being carried out on possible links between Lantau Island and the mainland by causeway or high bridge.
