5. A senior UK Pathologist, Professor A K Mant of Guys Hospital told the Mac Lennan Inquiry that he was convinced, after examining the evidence, that the Inspector had committed suicide.

6. During his visit Lord Lloyd of Kilgerran (Liberal) undertook to press for amendments to the Nationality Bill on the lines proposed by the Reform Club. He said that Hong Kong should go to the European Human Rights Tribunal if it did not receive satisfactory treatment under the Bill.

7. Several papers joined the Rev P McGovern in welcoming the new maternity benefit legislation, but shared his reservations about the qualifying period of 40 weeks and the limit on the number of eligible children.

8. Reaction to the increases in bus fares was mixed although the 240 m subsidy to KMB was criticised. Dr L K Ding warned of the potentially socially explosive effect of increases at a time when CMB announced a 160% increase in profits.

9. It was reported that the Canadian Commissioner said he feared considerable emigration if the question of Hong Kong's future remained ambiguous. He also said Canada was thinking of putting restrictions on the numbers of overseas students going to Canadian institutions.

11. I was announced that representatives of developing country textile producers would meet in Hong Kong in June to discuss the MFA.

This would follow an expected decision on the EC's negotiating position.
