VISITS TO HONG KONG BY MEMBERS OF HONG KONG AND GENERAL DEPARTMENT

1. In my minute of 14 March 1980, I asked for authority for a number of visits by members of this department to Hong Kong in the financial year 1980/81, based on the understanding referred to in Mr McLaren's minute of 2 October 1979 to Mr Hunter. You agreed to my proposals.

2. The latest Inspection Report on HKGD recommends that the pattern of visiting should continue on the basis of 2 visits a year by the Head of Department and one by the Assistant with possible additional familiarisation visits by desk officers.

3. The purpose of this minute is to seek authority for:

a) a visit by myself to Hong Kong for 2 weeks in mid May;

b) a further visit by myself after about 6 months, within

the current financial year.

4. I am not yet able to make firm proposals for visits by the Assistant or desk officers but expect to do so before long.
