SIR ANTHONY ROYLE: VISIT TO SHENZHEN

For the record you might like to know that yesterday I accompanied Sir Anthony Royle (MP for Pichmond and ex-FCO Parliamentary Under-Secretary) on a visit to Shenzhen and Shekou.

2.

We had orly a limited amount of time, but it enabled us to go by car from Lowu to the part of the Special Zone at Shekou across Deep Bay which is run by China Merchants, and then return to Shenzhen to be given lunch by the Party Secretary and Vice-Mayor, Mr Huang Shimin.

3.

Nothing new energed from the visit about the Special Economic Zone itself. The atmosphere was very friendly. Sir Anthony said all the right things about Sino/British friendship and co-operation between Hong Kong and Guangdong. The Chinese responded in kind.

4.

This was, so far as I know, the first occasion on which a British MP has visited the Special Economic Zone, For me it was a useful way of maintaining contact with some of the people in charge on the other side of the border and following up on some minor matters of business.
