I should have reported to you long 'ere this but, frankly, until I began my "study leave" I allowed my time to be fully preoccupied with matters domestic - that I have accepted an invitation from Robin Leigh- Pemberton (Chairman of Natwest) to be the "principal' speaker at the Annual Dinner of the Overseas Bankers' Club on 1 February next in Guildhall. The other

(sub-principal!) špeaker will be the Governor of the Bank of England. I attach copies of the correspondence. I hope this is all right (and that the Secretariat vote can stand the strain of a return air fare). Obviously it is an invitation which would have been difficult to refuse. I shouldn't be away from Hong Kong for more than four days.
