TRAVELLER FIGURES

At Shenzhen

Statistics released by the Shenzhen check point showed that 6.91 million people crossed the border via Shenzhen last year, compared with some 5 million in 1979.

During the Christmas period between December 20 and 27, more than 150 300 people passed through Shenzhen, with 25 774 crossing the border on Christmas Day.

B. At Lo Wu

According to Immigration Department sources, about 4.5 million people crossed the border to and from China through Lo Wu in the first nine months of 1979. This increased to 5.2 million in the corresponding period last year. Among them, 2.45 million people went to China from Hong Kong and 2.75 million travelled in the opposite direction, representing an average daily number of more than 10 000 travellers on weekdays and 20 000 to 30 000 on weekends.

To cope with the increase in the number of travellers crossing Lo Wu, a new footbridge has been constructed and opened to pedestrian traffic recently (Please refer to "Lo Wu footbridge" in this report).

The existing check point at Lo Wu will be demolished this year to make way for the construction of a new two-storey office for the Immigration Department. It is expected that construction work will be completed in 1984.
