willingness on the part of HMG to accept the claim of the Nationalist Chinese authorities in Taiwan to be the government of China; if appropriate a reply might be sent via an intermediary, eg the ATTC.

never to refer to Taiwan as the Republic of China' (or even 'China') in communications of any nature.

While it is essential to adhere to (b) in all cases, there may be exceptions to (a) (eg enquiries of an essentially statistical or scientific nature from Taiwan organisations) to which other government departments may at their discretion reply. In case of doubt FED should be consulted.
