The Hong Kong-based China Merchants Steam Navigation Company announced that it had been authorized by the State Council of China to set up an industrial zone for foreign investment in the Shekou peninsula on the Chinese side of Deep Bay.
Site in Tuen Mun leased to China Cement Company (Hong Kong) Limited for a joint venture between Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited and Kaiser Cement Corporation of California; planned for completion in 1982. The Bank of China (for the first time) one of the three lead banks in a syndicated loan of HK$617 million to finance construction.
