HONG KONG ANNUAL REVIEW

118/2

Thank you for your letter of 3 February. I have no doubt that the comment in your second paragraph was compressed, but the warning note I wished to strike was more about the frame of mind of the population than the economy itself in absolute terms. The latter by comparative world standards is not bad, and I should hope would improve at least in the second half of this year though this is speculation. However a combination of things including inflation, immigration and failure of real incomes to rise in marked contrast to previous years, has produced a rather gloomy and querulous mood.

It may or may not be ephemeral, but while it is there it is something extra that needs to be watched.
