The Chinese recently approached the UN Disaster Relief Organisation (UNDRO) for help over massive floods and drought disaster affecting almost 200 million people. This is the first time the Chinese have requested foreign aid. The Chinese request was passed by UNDRO to a number of countries and to the Community as a whole. The Council decided last month to give a modest contribution (2,000 tons of milk powder, 8,000 tons of rape seed oil).
