I was dismayed by the length of the alternative replies to PQs in HKTelNo 1084. FCOTelNo 917 was restrained in the circumstances.

Though it is not really my business I have had a word with Bill Ellis, whose responsibilities include the co-ordination of replies. He explained that the drafts reached him very shortly before the deadline for despatch, and that there was no time to shorten them nor anyone available to consult. I suggested that he might usefully recirculate the guidance about PQs which the Department has provided from time to time. He agreed to do this.
