PQ: NEXT GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG

1. I submit a draft answer with material for supplementaries and a

background note to a Question put down by Mr Robert Parry MP for

oral answer on 20 May.

2. It has not yet been decided who should succeed Sir Murray

MacLehose when he retires in April next year. It is not in any

case policy to comment on appointments to Diplomatic Service or

Overseas Civil Service posts so far in advance of the vacancy arising.

3. The Hong Kong Government are aware of the terms of the draft

answer.
