Reply by Secretary for Security to a Question by the Hon. CHAN Kam-chuen, JP, în the Legislative Council on 24th June, 1901

Question: In view of the recent public interest on the issue of capital punishment, will Government

state :

(a) the number of reported homicide cases

on an annual basis since 1945;

(b)

when the last convicted murderer was executed in Hong Kong; and

(c)

subsequent to (b), how many persons whose death sentence had been commuted to imprisonment have since been released?

Attached to the written version of this

answer is a table of statistics on homicide

cases reported in the last 35 years, expressed

in terms both of absolute numbers and cf rates

per hundred thousand population.

The last convicted murderer was executed in

Hong Kong on 16th November 1966.

Subsequent to (b) 15 of the 124 persons

whose death sentences have been commuted

to terms of imprisonment, have been released

to date.
