Internal self government since 1964 but Governor
Independence has been
responsible for external affairs, defence, internal
security and the public service.
delayed by Guatemala's claim to Belize but as a result of
recent negotiations ''Heads of Agreement'' were signed
on 11 March 1981 by Guatemala, the UK and Relize which
will form the basis of a Treaty of Settlement. Relize
Constitutional Conference, which is the first step in
the Constitutional process leading to independence opened
in London on 6 April. 1980 UN Resolution called for
Belize to be independent by the end of 1981.
