Questions for the next governor of Hong Kong
from Emily Lau of HK TVB News
1. The uppermost question on most MK people's mind is the New Territories
lease, which is due to expire in 1997. Does the new governor think a
solution can be found to this problem in the not too distant future? Does he/she think an early solution is vital to MK's prosperity and
economic well being?
What kind of arrangement does he/she think would benefit the people
of MK?
Should the people of Hong Kong be consulted?
2. China has repeatedly stressed the role of HK in helping to develop
Shun Chun and other parts of the Canton province as special economic zones.
Does the new governor think there will be need in the near future for
some special arrangements to broaden or increase exchanges between the
two regions, such as simplifying customs and immigration procedures at
border crossings?
3. HK is presently faced with the problem of illegal immigration from China
and this problem will not go away until the living standard in China is
substantially raised. In the meantime, does the new governor think that
existing arrangements for intercepting illegal immigrants adequate or should there be tougher measures to stop the flow? Is the Chinese govt.
co-operating fully?
4. What does the new governor think of HK's laissez-faire policy?
5. Many AK people think they have been treated unfairly by the UK govt on
a number of issues, such as the nationality act, trade and education for
HK students in the UK. What can be done to make the UK govt more amenable
to the needs of the HK people?
I would like to interview the new governor in English as well as Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin) if that is at all possible.
