Thank you for sending a formal letter of appointment on 17 May.

I now confirm that the terms of the letter and its enclosure are acceptable, subject to the following comments:

I assume the medical clearance I obtained before coming here on 28 October 1977 is adequate (Letter, para.1).

My accommodation is actually provided by the Hong Kong Government but furnished and maintained (except for "landlords

responsibilities") by the PSA (Letter, para.4).

By agreement, my children are being educated at a local Hong Kong Government school (Memorandum, 2c).

The passage in brackets about hooking all flights through the Hong Kong Government Office in London (Memorandum, 2D) should be deleted. The annex is listing conditions of service under Diplomatic Service Regulations (DSR). The system of concessionary fares available to the Hong Kong Government might in some circumstances produce an arrangement which is less flexible than that under DSR. In addition, the suggested system would unnecessarily complicate arrangements for travel and sending baggage when an officer is first posted to Hong Kong.

With this passage

deleted it would still be open to individual officers to use the Hong Kong Government system if they wished.
