Retirement ages of Judges (CSB)

Last year Hong Kong approached us for approval to amend Letters Patent to permit:

High Court Judges to retire at 65;

individual District Court Judges (who normally retire at 60) to extend to 65;

retirement leave to be taken after date of retirement.

Mr Clift's brief for Hong Kong last year shows the various objections raised by the FCO. It then turned out that there was disagreement between the Chief Justice and the Attorney- General over some provisions. These have been resolved (the Chief Justice's letter of 15 September) and a letter will come to us shortly.
