Hong Kong Social Workers' General Union

Director of Social Welfare.

Dear Sir,

Re:

Welfare Class Review

24th June, 1980

We are disappointed to receive no reply from your department in respect of our letter dated 17 March 1980. We are writing again to ask for a direct

meeting so that we may express our views.

We have become a legal trade union on 6th February 1980 and our 1st General Meeting was held on 4th May 1980 in which the 1st Executive Committee was elected. Its priority targets are to expedite the implementation of the Welfare Class Review in the voluntary sector and to protect the rights of all

social workers.

We cannot accept your proposal that we should submit a written repre- sentation to the WCR Steering Committee as it will not effectively reflect our views without any misunderstanding. Two Umelco Councillors whom we approached on 28th May 1980 also supported our request for a direct meeting. We are there-- fore writing to ask that a direct meeting be arranged before mid-July to discuss the progress of the WCR and the Union's participation in it.

To facilitate our participation in the Review, please provide us with

the following information:

(1) A report on the WCR and its implementation;

(2) Details of the Social Work Cadetship Scheme and its progress;

(3) Committee papers, minutes of meetings and progress reports of the

Steering Committee and Working Group;

(4) Details of in-service training programmes for social work assist-

ants and senior social work assistants in your department.

We hope the authorities will accord us due respect and co-operation. Kindly favour us with an early reply. For enquiries, please write to us or telephone the under-signed on 3-284949 (2pm - 9.30 pm).

Umelco Office.

Yours faithfully,

MAK Hoi-wah

President
