Origins of and Routes taken by

province.

Almost all illegal immigrants come from Guangdong

The great majority are from 6 counties to the north and north-east of Hong Kong (see illustrative map). The attached table shows the counties of origin of illegal immigrants arrested in Hong Kong between 1 July and

30 September.

2.

About 75% of illegal immigrants are single men between the ages of 15 and 29 with only primary school education. The majority are agricultural workers.

3.

There are three main routes taken by illegal

immigrants:

A. On foot across the land border. (about 40%)

The percentage attempting this route has been considerably reduced in recent months by measures on both sides. The border fence and flood lighting on the Hong Kong side also means that relatively few who attempt this route manage to evade arrest. However arrest figures remain high at the western end of the land border where the border

fence has not yet been completed.

B. Across Deep Bay and Mirs Bay by small boat,

flotation devices or by swimming. (about 25%) This route is increasingly taken by those who have reached areas near Hong Kong but wish to avoid the greater chances of arrest on the

land border.
