On 7th August 1980 a motorised

vessel arrived in Hong Kong with

239 ethnic Chinese passengers aboard. The boat did not have any identification markings.

Special Branch officers visited the Western Quarantine Anchorage on the morning of 8th August and noted that the boat appeared to be a typical flat-bottomed Chinese-style river-bont. Enquiries made indicated that the passengers were all of ethnic Chinese Vietnamose been settled at various Overseas Chinese Farms in China. was organised by a man named

The boat had departed on either 3rd or 4th August from Duchuankou (3256/5307/0656) in Huiyang (1920/7122) County, Tonghu (3392/3275) Overseas Chinese Farm. Two other smaller motorised boats assisted in ferrying the passengers from Duchuankou to a point on the river about 2 km. away where the river boat lay. The smaller boats then returned to shore.

The group travelled down the Dongjiang (2639/3068) (East River) via Humen (5706/7024) to Hong Kong, About six "pilots" had been employed, (1132/1627).

the group met a Chinese Public Security patrol boat (number N/K) and allegedly told the PS crew that they were Vietnamese refugees heading for Hong Kong. The PS with rice and water,

crew supplied them repaired the river boat's engine, and left the following day. The river boat then proceeded without incident straight to Hong Kong.
