Illegal Immigrants and Vietnamese Refugees

Land on Sai Kung Peninsula

At about 1600 hours on 31st January, two Chinese persons, male, and a female, approached a British Army camp on the Sai Kung Peninsula and requested food. They were arrested as suspect illegal immigrants (IIs) and were sent to Sai Kung Police Station where they claimed to be Vietnamese refugees.

The two persons, a husband and wife, were interviewed by Special Branch officers and eventually admitted to being IIs from China, and never to have been to Vietnam. They claimed to have arrived by boat from China. in a party of 12, including seven Vietnamese refugees settled in China. To date, none of the others in the group are believed to have been arrested or have surrendered themselves.
