MEETING WITH LORD SELKIRK

1. You asked for some statistics for your meeting this morning with Lord Selkirk:

Vietnamese Refugees

a)

a copy of our savinggram no 2 to Bonn which gives statistics for arrivals in and resettlement from countries

of first asylum in the Region up to 1 January 1980 (Table 1). and the cummulative totals of resettlement of refugees from the region (Table 2).

b) A copy of Hong Kong telno 444 which gives the position in Hong Kong for this year up to 25 March.

2. Of the 10,000 Vietnamese refugees HriG undertook to resettle at the Geneva Conference last year approximately 3,500 have so far àrrived in the UK.

HMG undertook at the Geneva Conference to contribute £5 million to the UNHCR programme for Vietnamese Refugees.

4. It is not possible to identify exactly how much the Vietnamese refugees have cost the Hong Kong Government but the direct identifiable cost so far is the $72 million.

a) Hong Kong telno 7 giving the totals of legals who entered Hong Kong last year and of illegals who were arrested last year. b) Hong Kong telno 445 giving the same totals to 24 March this

year.
