WHITE PAPER ON NATIONALITY LAW

1.

Sir Murray MacLehose said that the main problem concerned

locally-engaged Administrative Officers who were worried about

their future in the event of a Chinese take-over. He saw no

solution apart from a satisfactory agreement with China on the future of Hong Kong. But it was a sign of trouble which would get more difficult as 1997 drew nearer. The White Paper

had acted as a catalyst for people's fears.

2.

Lord Carrington asked how many people were involved.

Sir M MacLehose said about 30,000 including the Police.
