Jean YK,

TA

Many thanks for your letters of 30 June and 7 July. It was good to see you at the Dragonboat Dinner.

As you know, our immigration procedures are not intended to make difficulties for visitors such as yourself from Hong Kong. But I am not surprised that immigration officials outside Britain find our entry certificate arrangements hard to understand. Nevertheless I see little prospect of our introducing any fundamental changes.

Our posts overseas are of course always ready to assist travellers from Hong Kong who have difficulties, and we have made representations on Hong Kong's behalf about the inconvenient visa requirements of some countries. And as you say, the multiple certificates system will ease matters for visitors such as yourself. Please let me know if you find yourself in difficulty again.

yours wisely,

Sir Y K Kan 11th Floor Swire House HONG KONG
