CHINESE ACCEPTANCE OF HONG KONG BRITISH PASSPORTS

I was interested in the reference in your letter of 7 February to Richard Fursland (on 'Proposed changes in British Nationality Law') to Chinese acceptance of Hong Kong British passports as valid travel documents). I had not been aware that the Chinese were willing to treat these passports as valid for travel purposes and as far as as I can remember in any recent meetings in China involving officials here carrying such passports, the Chinese have generally suggested that the people concerned used the now standard 'Huixiang Zheng' (certificate for return home). these passports are used for immigration purposes when leaving and entering at Lowu. Presumably, the only proof of Chinese acceptance would be finding visas stamped on such passports: Immigration Department to check this at Lowu.
