DRAFT " RELEVANT EMPLOYMENT" PROVISION
"On application made to him in the prescribed manner the Secretary of
State will register as a British Citizen a minor child provided that
the Secretary of State is satisfied that at the time of the birth of
the child one of his parents was [and still is] a British Citizen bŷ
descent [from a parent born in the UK] and at the time of the birth and
throughout the period of [5] years immediately preceding the date of
birth he or she had been engaged in relevant employment. For the
purpose of this section a period of ordinary residence in the
United Kingdom will count towards the period of 5 years residence.

"In this section " relevant employment
(a)
11 means:
appointment by HMG in the United Kingdom to an international
organisation of which HMG is a member;
on U.K.-based terms [to be better expressed]
(b) Service in the employment of the body (incorporated or unincorpor-
ated) which is established in the United Kingdom or which either
directly or indirectly is controlled by such a body established in
the United Kingdom;

Employment with Authorised Service Organisations which are subject
to the provisions of the Service Discipline Acts when serving
abroad with the armed forces;
OSAS personnel [formal definition not yet obtained from ODA].
NOTES
i)
The definition at (b) above comes from the Department of Trade.
We are still not sure that it goes far enough, e.g. it may not
cover the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank. We assume that it would
cover the British Council but we have not yet checked.
