The objective reasons why the Club building should be preserved are numerous, and have been generally recognized by enlightened individuals in Government

and in the community at large.

Historical importance

Antiquities Advisory Board that this 19th Century

building should be preserved on historical merit alone is widely supported.

The recommendation of the

Architectural importance - There is virtual unanimity

among architects and scholars that the building is a

fine example of the Victorian style, and one of the

very few remaining in Hong Kong.

3. Environmental importance The central location of

the building and its integral relationship with City

Hall, Statue Square, the Supreme Court building, and Chater Garden give the present structure a special and social significance. Its replacement by a high rise building would have a highly adverse impact on Central District.

Aesthetic importance Most of the people living or working in Central find the building "beautiful",

"pleasing", and in general adding significantly to the landscape.

Landmark importance The building has been a familiar landmark for many years, and would gain in this respect as the pace of development intensifies.

6. Future importance Certainly, buildings and other

visible reminders of by-gone eras will be even more
