Wednesday, 30.4.80: Meeting with Oberkirchenrat W.J. Blank and Vice-President Dr. Koch of the Foreign Office of the Evangelische

Kirche in Deutschland who with OKR Blank considered ways and means of how to involve the "Rat" of the EKD in bringing pressure upon Bonn and the Laender regarding an increase of the present quota of 20,000 with special emphasis upon Hong kong's predicament. OKR Blank drafted an information piece about my visit to Germany for the Evangelische Pressedienst. I then was interviewed in great length by Renate Zeis of the Deutsche Presse Agentur (DPA) who

promised to produce an anticle about the Vietnamese boat refugee

problem in Hong Kong. In the late afternoon I attended a Press

Conference organized by the British Consul-General, Mr. Hudson and HM Consul, Mr. J.H.L. Lacey. The interview took place in the presence of both Mr. Hudson and Mr. Lacey with the following reporters:

Dr. Joerg Bremer Frankfurter Allgemeine

Mr. Dietrich Reiss

-

Frankfurter Rundschau

Dr. Krimhilde Pardeg

H

Frankfurter Neue Presse.

All papers reported favourably and fairly accurately (Appendix 2).

In the evening I was interviewed by Mr. Wolfgang Thielmann of the Informationsdienst der Evangelischen Allianz (Postfach 1820, 6330

Wetzlar 1) who seemed to be helpful and committed.

His press service

has a nationwide distribution network. He requested to be kept

informed and to be put on Government's and our mailing list.

Friday, 2.5.80: The itinerary of this day had been prepared by

Dr. Guenter Steinhaeuser, Secretary of State of the Government of

Hessia. I met Dr. Steinhaeuser in September 1979 at a meeting in the Hessische Sozialministerium and again in Hong Kong in February

1980.

9 a.m.:

Dr. Steinhaeuser drove with me from the Frankfurter Hof

to the Jagdschloss Platte. On the way he outlined the refugee situation in Hessen and his government's attitude to it (Appendix 3/4/5/6).
