RESETTLEMENT OF VIETNAMESE BUAT REFUGEES FROM HONG KONG

We were interested to see a Fauters report dated 16 January that the Turks and Caicos Islands is considering accapting refugees from South East Asia in April. The brief story said that a camp would be offered on the northern tip of Grand Turk on a site being vacated by the US Navy. This camp would be under the care of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, We should be interested to know whether you are planning to accept refugees from South East Asia on a permanent basis or whether the idea is a variant of the refugee processing centre concept now being implemented in camps run by the UNHCR in Indonesia and the Philippines, Obviously if permanent settlement is « possibility

a we should hope that the claims of the 50,000 Vietnamese boat refugees at present here would be favourably considered, tim should be grateful to know, possibly by telegram, whether you would like any further background information on refugees here. For the moment, I attach a fact sheet showing the position at 1 December and we shall copy to you the next issue when it is completed.
