We offered our assistance regarding country orientation and language training but were told that this was not required by Sweden as once the selection has been made

place within 2-3 weeks.

Sweden as most other European countries uses part of the quota for family reunion cases. Sweden is furthermore interested

in moving refugees who for various reasons (age, handicap, etc.) are not accepted by other countries.

AMS is responsible for the housing of refugees who are received in

camps or individual accommodations. Refugees in individual

accommodations outnumber those in camps but receive the same services as those in camps. Vocational and language courses are being arranged as a suitable foundation for employment.

2:00 p.m.:

Meeting with the Director of the Arbetsmarknadsstyrelsen (National Labour Market Board) Mr. Ragnar Wahlstroem. The main

concern of his Department is housing, education, training and care

for refugees i.e. their integration into the Swedish Society.

He stressed the weed for great flexibility and sensitivity by those in charge of refugees. Refugees with poor educational background

must be motivated to acquire a suitable vocational and educational

foundation. His concern is also with the municipal authorities which must make comprehensive preparations for refugees moving out of camps. He sees to it that the municipal authorities obtain financial compen- sation from the State for their expenditure on behalf of the refugees. This includes day nurseries, family day care and leisure centres.

We were again told that the Vietnamese refugees are well liked, are causing no problems and are considered the best people among all refugees in Sweden.
