Report by Miss Dorothy Lee and Mr. K.L. Stumpf
Date: 18th May

SHEET NO.
Sunday, 18.5.80: The Danish Interchurch Aid had arranged an early morning flight to Juetland where we would meet Mr. Johannes Rasmussen, Headmaster of a private school in Haderslev and member of a Juetland
Board responsible for the integration of Vietnamese refugees at three
processing centres. Mr. Rasmussen in the sixties had been the Principal
of the Kwun Tong Vocational Training Centre.
a) Haderslev: 71 Vietnamese refugees had just moved into a beautifully
located Motel, rented by Government. The Municipal authorities
in close cooperation with Mr. Rasmussen's Committee provides very intensive language training. Many of the refugees already spoke. Danish although they had only been in the country for about 5 months.
It was encouraging to observe how well they mixed with the local
people. They have four language training sessions a day. They
will have to stay in such centres for at least 11⁄2 years.
period is considered necessary to prepare them adequately for life
in Denmark. No difficulties have so far been encountered.

b) Kolding: 65 Vietnamese refugees are housed in the former nurses
quarters of a Hospital. The accommodations are very adequate,
clean and in beautiful surroundings. Here again we observed how
well the refugees mix with the population. They do already their
own buying daily necessities, drive cars, etc.
Mr. Rasmussen informed us briefly about some basic policy matters.
The selection and admittance of refugees is solely a Government
responsibility.
