Following the Governor's introductory remarks, Sir Faul opened the meeting for questions. were raised :
The following subjects
nr. Canavan asked whether there had been any complaints from refugees of mal-treatment by security forces in nong nong. ne suggested that there had been some ill- treatment by the special boat section and that in his view there should be an independent enquiry. In reply the Governor said that there had been a single anonymous complaint allegedly from a member of the small boat teams. The Governor said that this was under investigat- ion at the time he left Hong Kong but he would be surprised if there were any substance to it. de did not believe that there was any evidence to suggest that a public enquiry was needed.
Hon. Charles Morrison asked the Governor if he thought that the expanding trade interest between Hong Kong and China could lead to any political difficulties. In answer, the Governor said that China, through its repre- sentatives in Hong Kong, had been investing heavily over the past five years and he did not regard this as adverse development in any way. riore recently there has been a "so-called" power shift from the longs to Chinese business- men. The Governor said that in his view such movements were not significant provided the Chinese involved had the interests of iong nong at heart and he had no doubt that this was the case.
