BACKGROUND NOTE

VIETNAMESE REFUGEES IN HONG KONG

1. 73,692 Vietnamese boat refugees were allowed to land tempor-

arily in Hong Kong in 1979 and 10 in the first two weeks of this

year; 24,377 Vietnamese refugees from Hong Kong were resettled

by UNHCR in countries of permanent settlement in 1979 and a

further 836 up to 15 January this year.

2. The British Government have undertaken to accept a total of

11,000 of these refugees for resettlement in the UK.

Last year

3,897 were resettled in this country; it is hoped to resettle a

further 2,600 in the first three months of this year and to com-

plete the full commitment by not later than the end of the

1980-81 financial year.
