A sixth technical institute is planned for completion in 1984. There are 3,140 full-time places, 1,000 part-time day places and 14,120 part-time evening students in technical institutes in the 1979/80 session.

23.

Upon completion of the sixth technical institute, there will be a total capacity in craft-level courses for about 15,000 Form III leavers.

Teacher Training

24

Teacher training is provided at three colleges of education and at the technical teachers' college. The colleges of education offer two-year full-time courses designed to produce non-graduate teachers. Starting from September 1980, these courses ere to be extended to three years (except for those students who enter with certain Advanced Level qualifications) in order to improve the quality of teacher training. Training for graduate teachers is not compulsory, but graduates who enter the teaching profession are encouraged to take part in one or other of the training courses offered by the universities.

25.

The Technical Teachers' College trains teachers for secondary schools, prevoc tional schools, the technical institutes and industry. It provides both full and part-time courses, some of which are geared to the specific needs of instruction in industry.

26.

Both the colleges of education and the Technical Teachers' College provide a variety of in-service training courses for practising teachers.

Universities and Polytechnic

27.

There are two universities in Hong Kong: the University of Hong Kong, founded in 1911, has 4,990 full-time students in the 1979/80 academic year; the Chinese University of Hong Kong, founded in 1963, has 4,878 such students. The Hong Kong Polytechnic, founded in 1972, has 10,266 full-time and equivalent part-time students in the 1979/80 academic year.

28.

The target for the approved combined under-graduate popul: tion at the two universities is 10,330 by 1980/81. Once this has been achieved numbers are planned to grow at 3% per annum. The Polytechnic will be stablised at about 12,000 full-time and equivalent part-time students (or a total student body of nearly 30,000) and many of its lower-level courses are to be taken over and expanded in the technical institutes, thus enabling the Polytechnic to concentrate on more advanced courses, including some leading to degrees.
