During the year 1979 the influx of Vietnamese refugees into Hong Kong resulted in a slight increase in the infant mortality and tuberculosis notification rates. The sudden increase in popuktion from legal and illegal immigrants from China also has imposed a heavy demand on the existing services.

The common childhood diseases such as poliomyelitis, diphtheria and whooping cough have virtually disappeared. The mortality pattern of diseases has changed dramatically over the past two decades and is now almost identical to that of an advanced western country, the five leading causes of death being cancer, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, pneumonia and accidents. Improvements have also been achieved in the in-patient and out-patient services provided, particularly in the development and expansion of hospitals and clinics. any clinics are now opën in the evenings and on Sundays and public holidays.

The Medical Development Advisory Committee continues to monitor and advise on the phased implementation of the 10-year development programme and reviews progress each year, updating the programme where necessary. To keep pace with the expected increased demand in the next ten years, especially in the main centres of population and in the New Towns of Shatin änd Tuen Mun, new hospitals and clinics are being planned which when completed will lead to a further improvement of services.
